Synphase

Our Doctors can provide a repeat prescription of Synphase with next day delivery

Synphase is a type of oral contraceptive known as a combined contraceptive pill. This form of contraception is also known informally as “the pill.” It works by adding synthetic hormones that are recognised by a woman’s body as the female sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone.
The Synphase combined contraceptive pill is marketed by Pharmacia Limited. The pill contains synthetic versions of oestrogen and progesterone. The particular synthetic hormones used are ethinylestradiol, recognised as oestrogen, and norethisterone, which is a synthetic form of progesterone. Synphase is available in 28-day strips containing 21 tablets in two different dosages.

How Does Synphase Work?

The hormones in Synphase prevent pregnancy by fooling the body into believing the normal menstrual cycle has already been completed. The menstrual cycle is regulated by rising and falling hormone levels, so when the hormone levels are always high, the regular cycle is interrupted. This interruption prevents mature eggs from being released by the ovaries. It also prevents the lining of the uterus from thickening in preparation for egg implantation. Finally, the combination of ethinylestradiol and norethisterone causes a mucus barrier to form at the far end of the vagina that makes it difficult for sperm to pass through.

Synphase Dosage

A 28-day cycle of Synphase includes tablets in two different doses that are taken according to a prescribed schedule. Included in the pack are nine white pills with a dosage of 35 micrograms ethinylestradiol and 1 milligramme norethisterone. Also included are 12 blue pills with a dosage of 35 micrograms ethinylestradiol and 500 milligramme norethisterone.

How Often is Ovysmen Taken?

Synphase tablets are taken for the first 21 days of woman’s menstrual cycle according to a standard schedule. For the first seven days, one blue pill with 500 micrograms norethisterone is taken per day. For the following nine days, one white pill with 1 milligramme norethisterone is taken per day. On the final five days, one blue pill is again taken each day. No pills are taken on the final seven days of the 28-day cycle.

How Effective is Synphase?

Synphase is one of the most effective forms of birth control on the market. Studies show that 100 women taking Synphase or other combined contraceptive pills experience a birth rate of 0.1 to 3 births each year. In contrast, when condoms and diaphragms are used alone, the birth rate is between 2 and 20 births per 100 women each year.

Synphase Side Effects

Some women may experience side effects when taking Synphase. The most common side effects are as follows:
  • Upset stomach
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Headache
  • Changes in appetite
  • Weight gain
  • High blood pressure

What Other Medications Affect Synphase?

Several other medications may affect how Synphase works. These drugs may make Synphase less effective at preventing pregnancies. Such medications include antibiotics, sedatives, arthritis drugs, epilepsy drugs and St. John’s wort.
