Fexofenadine

Our Doctors can prescribe Fexofenadine with next day delivery

Fexofenadine is an antihistamine drug used to treat hay fever, allergies and hives. The drug is available over the counter and does not require a prescription. Fexofenadine was originally sold as Allegra, but is now available in generic versions.

How Does Fexofenadine Work?

Fexofenadine works by reducing the histamine levels that cause allergic responses to environmental agents in susceptible patients.

Fexofenadine Dosage

This drug is most often administered in a tablet form and is readily available in 30 milligram, 60 milligram and 180 milligram dosages. Smaller dosages are available in both a liquid suspension and dissolving tablets. These easier-to-administer forms with lower dosages are only recommended for children over six years old unless otherwise directed by a doctor. Adults and children over the age of 12 can take a daily 180 milligram dose, while children age six to 12 should take no more than 60 milligrams per day. For infants and toddlers, a half dose can be given twice daily, not exceeding a total of 30 milligrams of the drug per day.

How Long Does a Course of Fexofenadine Last?

The treatment course for fexofenadine depends on the condition being addressed. Patients who are sensitive to environmental allergens may continue a treatment course until they are no longer exposed to irritating levels of the allergen. If a condition like hives is being treated, a medication course of several weeks may be indicated. Patients should discuss the appropriate treatment course with their doctor or refer to the information that comes packaged with the over-the-counter drug.

How Effective is Fexofenadine?

Fexofenadine effectively reduces and blocks histamine production when used regularly and as directed. When mixed with alcohol, however, the drug is not effective, as alcohol naturally increases histamine production, counteracting the histamine-reducing action of fexofenadine.

Fexofenadine Side Effects

Most patients tolerate fexofenadine well, making it an ideal drug to offer without a prescription. Side effects do occur but are rare. Some patients experience vomiting, drowsiness, headaches, digestive issues, coughing, dizziness and pain. Trials showed that there is a slightly increased risk of cold, flu, fever and other infections when using fexofenadine.

What Other Medications Affect Fexofenadine?

Fexofenadine mixes well with many other medications, but there are several known interactions. When taken with fruit juices, the drug is less effective. Antacids that include the ingredients aluminium or magnesium are also known to decrease the absorption of fexofenadine. Patients should exercise caution if they are already taking either ketoconazole or erythromycin, as they can increase the amount of fexofenadine the body metabolizes.

Who Should Not Take Fexofenadine?

Fexofenadine is not recommended for patients who have a known allergy to similar drugs, are over 65 or suffer from kidney disease. Fexofenadine is not recommended for women who are pregnant, as the drug is known potentially to cause birth defects in unborn children. Breastfeeding mothers should be aware that the drug can pass through breast milk and should discuss the risks with their doctor before taking the medication.
