Avomine

Our Doctors can prescribe Avomine with next day delivery

Avomine, generically known as promethazine, is a powerful antihistamine that has many uses. One of these is the prevention of nausea. This makes it a great medicine for preventing and treating travel sickness. Since it has a strong sedative effect, it should only be used by those who will not be driving the vehicle. Avomine is manufactured by Manx Healthcare.

How Does Avomine Work?

Avomine is an H1 receptor antagonist. This form of antihistamine doesn't stop histamine from being produced by the body. Instead, it blocks certain histamine receptors. It also is a muscarinic acetylcholine antagonist and a very weak dopamine antagonist.

How Should Avomine be Used?

To prevent travel sickness in adults on long journeys, a single tablet of Avomine should be taken at bedtime the night before travelling. To prevent sickness on shorter journeys, a tablet should be taken one to two hours before the start of the trip.
To eliminate currently existing travel sickness in adults, take one tablet right away and another later in the same evening. A final tablet should be taken the following evening. For treatment, it is important to take the first dose soon after travel sickness begins.
Children between five and 10 should take half the adult dose. Patients over 10 should take the full adult dose.

How Effective is Avomine?

Avomine is a very effective anti-sickness medicine. Only rarely will a patient need to repeat a dose sooner than eight hours after the previous dose.

Avomine Side Effects

The most common side effect of Avomine is sedation. Users may experience sedation ranging from slight drowsiness all the way to deep sleep. Other common side effects include paradoxical stimulation of the central nervous system, which can cause insomnia and excitability. Dry mouth, nightmares, dizziness, ringing in the ears, blurry or double vision, nausea, vomiting and unusually happy mood are side effects that may also be experienced.
Serious side effects include abnormal movements, uncontrollable movements, hallucinations, overwhelming fear, rash, hives, swelling of the face or throat, faintness and difficulty breathing. If serious symptoms are experienced, the patient should contact a doctor immediately.

What Other Medications Affect Avomine?

Medications for irritable bowel disease, Parkinson's disease, seizures, urinary problems, ulcers, sedatives, pain, mental illness, chemotherapy, and drugs in the general classes of antihistamines, barbiturates, and sedatives are all especially likely to interact with Avomine. To be sure there won't be any harmful interactions, patients should tell their doctors about all of the medications and dietary supplements they take.

Who Should Not Take Avomine?

People under two years old should not take Avomine because its safety in this age group has not been studied. It should also be avoided by those who are pregnant or nursing due to lack of studies in this population. Others who should avoid this medicine are those allergic to promethazine and people over age 65. Avomine can interfere with the results of skin tests and pregnancy tests, so those who will be having one of these tests should avoid taking this medicine around the time of testing
